made sure that we cut taxes for the middle class, and in addition to that, when that occurred, what did romney do? romney said no, let detroit go bankrupt. we moved in and helped people refinance their loans. governor romney says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility of their lives. my friend said 30% are takers. these people are my mom and dad, my neighbors. they pay more tax than governor romney pays. they are elderly people who in fact are living off of social security. there are veterans who are not quote not paying taxes. i've had it up to here with this notion -- instead of signing pledges not to ask the wealthiest among us to contribute to bring back the middle class, they should be signing a pledge saying to the middle class, we're going to level the playing field. we're going to give you a fair shot again. we are going to not repeat the mistakes we made in the past by having a different set of rules for wall street and main street. making sure that we continue to hemorrhage these tax cuts for the super wealthy. they're pushing the continuation of a tax

on that but the fiscal cliff being the package of spending cuts and tax increases that are scheduled to go into effect the end of the year. and there is a lot of worry among economists and business people that could throw the economy and spending cuts in defense, you've got a lot of defense contractors word rid about what is going to happen after the turn of the new year. it's anybody's guess in terms of whether congress can come together after the election but before every new person takes office. there is hope that in the november through january period that congress and the white house can come to an agreement and either postpone those spending cuts or tax increases or come to some new agreement on the budget that could replace the fiscal cliff. i think there will be a postponement of it and perhaps waiting for the new presidential and congressional elections, wait until they come in and sort it out. but depending on how the election goes, the lame duck session which will be in office after the election might be a reason to make a deal before the new people come in. so we'll see. host: the next cal

it. krystal, when you look at his record, it seems right for pickings. his budget raises taxes on the poor. it makes seniors pay $6400 more for medicare coverage, all while giving millionaires a $265,000 tax break. meanwhile, he voted for defense cuts he blames on president obama and mr. fiscal conservative voted to increase the debt ceiling by $4 trillion under president bush. seems like right pickens to me, krystal. >> frankly, he can't be directly honest about the plans because they are toxic. it is not popular to fund tax cuts for the rich on the backs of the poor. that is not something that sells in this election. on the other hand, biden and obama have been very consistent and their policies are broadly popular. they are talking about restoring the middle class. they are talking about the american dream. they have a balanced plan that makes sense to americans. so i think it is very tough for paul ryan. not only does he have to defend his own budget but mitt romney's plans and he has to be able to reconcile the differences between what mitt romney has been selling and what
